About Me

Hi - I'm Kate Colleran and I want to welcome you to my website and my little corner of the quilt world!

Seams Like A Dream Quilt Designs started in 2003.  My goal has always been to help you make a quilt.  And to have fun.  To me, quilting is about creating, about learning, about having fun, and about community.

What's your fabric style?  My patterns will work with traditional fabrics, with moderns, with brights...  You get to choose the look of your quilt - it's your quilt design, I'll just help you along.

Have a look around my website and shop, follow along on my blog, follow me on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest. Click Here to sign up for my newsletter and get a free quilt pattern! A gift from me to you!

Lectures and Classes

I love to travel and would be thrilled to come visit your shop or guild and do a trunk show or teach a class. Working with quilters like you is one of my most satisfying things. I hope my classes and lectures will spark your creativity and create quilting confidence.

And while in-person classes are my favorite, I also have video classes on Bluprint and Quilting Daily.

Design

When I first started Seams Like a Dream with my business partner, I wanted to design. I had already fallen  in love with quilting, but I wanted to do more. I found myself tweaking patterns when I bought them, not only using my own color scheme, but changing up elements of the pattern! So it was just natural that my next challenge would be to start from scratch and design my own quilts!

Over the years, my style has evolved. It has always been influenced by traditional quilting and patterns, but with a more modern twist. When my business partner retired from the business, it changed again. One thing has not changed; my commitment to writing and designing for the quilter who wants a quick, fun, well written pattern. Pattern directions a beginner can follow.

Here are just a few of my best selling, favorite patterns:

Bright Hope

This is one of my new patterns and it is a favorite of mine. I love the colors, the simple bold graphic feel of the pattern and I LOVE the black and white striped binding! What else do I love about it?  It is a design that would work in your favorite color scheme! I use solids in a rainbow gradation, but you could use any combination of fabrics that appeals to you- solids, prints, batiks…. bright, muted, pastel… you get to pick the look of your quilt!

And this is one of my Leftover patterns- patterns that include instructions for bonus quilts using some of the leftovers from the main quilt. A fun way to help you keep that scrap pile under control!

Crossroads

Crossroads is an old quilt with a new look! Originally it was designed and written for a shop hop in Connecticut. A few years later, we rewrote the pattern and published it as Crossroads. Last year I was able to remake the quilt using a brand new line designed by my good friend Tammy Silvers called Kismet for Island Batik. Doesn’t it look great! This pattern uses a 2 ½” strips and has 2 sizes of the quilt. The larger size with borders is pictured here.
If you have a 2 ½” strip pack lying around, this quilt would be a great choice! Click here to check out the pattern!

Top This!

This is one of the latest patterns I have made using my Mini Braid Template. I love using the Mini Braid. I can use small scraps with it and make braids to use as accents on bags, pillows, table runners, etc! I bet it would even make a great border on a quilt.
Hmmm… maybe for my next project!
I made my version of Top This! using leftover batiks from Island Batik. I love how it came out. Of course, this is another project that would look great in any color combination. The design is not dependent on one color or color family- just on using a great mix!
